The Elephant Man to Close Early So Bradley Cooper Can Attend the Oscars

The hit Broadway revival of Bernard Pomerance's The Elephant Man will now play its final performance at the Booth Theatre on Saturday, February 21 instead of February 22. The change in schedule allows star Bradley Cooper to attend this year's Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, where he is up for Best Actor for his performance in the film American Sniper. Additionally, the February 7 and 8 performances have also been canceled so that Cooper can attend the 67th annual DGA Awards, where he will be presenting to American Sniper director Clint Eastwood. Ticket holders for the canceled performances should contact their point-of-sale to exchange their tickets for a performance before the end of the run.

Costarring Patricia Clarkson and Alessandro Nivola, The Elephant Man is directed by Scott Ellis, who helmed a 2012 run at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, on which this production is based. The cast features Cooper as John Merrick, Clarkson as Mrs. Kendal, Nivola as Dr. Frederick Treves, Anthony Heald as Ross/Bishop Walsham How, Scott Lowell as Snork/Pinhead Manager/Lord John, Kathryn Meisle as Miss Sandwich/Princess, and Henry Stram as Carr Gomm/Conductor. The cast also includes Chris Bannow, Peter Bradbury, Lucas Calhoun, Eric Clem, Amanda Lea Mason, Marguerite Stimpson, and Emma Thorne.

Based on the real life of Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man tells the story of a 19th-century British man (Cooper) who became a star of the traveling freak-show circuit. When the renowned Dr. Treves (Nivola) takes Merrick under his care, he is astonished by the man's intelligence, unshakable faith, and most of all, his desire for love and understanding. He introduces Merrick to the beautiful actress Mrs. Kendal (Clarkson), who is deeply touched by this pure and genuine soul. As a complex friendship blossoms among the three, Treves and Kendal struggle to protect Merrick from a world of questionable intentions.

The Elephant Man features scenic and projection design by Timothy R. Mackabee, costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Philip S. Rosenberg, and original music and sound design by John Gromada.
